Achieving Depth

Published by weborglodge under Watercolor Tip Edit This

paintbrushesEver since I’ve started painting, I’ve always gravitated toward achieving depth.  Not necessarily of subject matter, but of presentation.  I like layers of detail.

A typical painting for me begins with initial washes.  If areas of these tones will be needed later, I’ll mask my highlights, then wait.  If watercolor has taught me anything, it has taught me to be patient.  Don’t rush.

To achieve a complex texture, I’ll often go back and add additional layers.  To do this, I initially wet the area of color using a squirrel hair quill brush.  For washes and wetting, this is my brush of choice.  It holds a lot of water.  It is soft and less likely to disturb layers.  They seem to hold up so much better than my more expensive sable hair brushes too.

Once I have my base established, then I bring out the texture tools.  I’ll use drybrush oftentimes.  This is one of my favorite techniques.  So much can be achieved in a little time.  Splattering is a finishing touch I’ll use for that final bit of texture.

My style isn’t for everyone.  As I’ve written before, I like detailed, realistic paintings.  This technique helps me in achieving that depth.
